Frequently asked questions about our burglar deterrent CDs

Q: Where should I put my CD player when it is playing the burglar deterrent sounds?

A: Here is what I did. Initially, I used my existing home CD player and adjusted its volume to a moderate level so the sound had a very realistic level when heard from outside my home. I then decided to buy another CD player to use for only burglar deterrence so that I would never need to change the CD from a music CD to a burglar deterrent CD when I leave home. Of course, changing CDs is easy, and you will not need to do that if you have a multi-disk CD player. In that case, permanently leave the burglar deterrent CD in one of the available slots.

When I used my existing home CD player, I left its speakers in their original locations. When I switched to using a dedicated burglar deterrent CD player, I put the player in a spot that I pass by whenever I leave home, thus making it convenient to use. I wanted to avoid cluttering my home with more speakers, so I put the new speakers in my attic. The sound generated in the attic is transmitted outside via my roof vents. Virtually all homes have various vents (soffit, gable, ridge, etc.) to dissipate attic heat.

Here is another option for locating one or more of your speakers. Building codes typically specify that a basement or utility room bearing a furnace have one or two make-up air vents that allow outside air to enter the room to make up for air burned in combustion by the furnace. You can point one or more of your speakers toward these vents, but do not block them.

Q: What if construction sounds are not appropriate for my home or business?

A: Then choose CD #2 of vacuuming sounds. However, keep in mind that inside construction is common. Whether it's remodeling a kitchen, bath, basement, or other room, or just using power tools as a hobby in your shop, sounds of inside construction are not rare.

Q: Rather than buying your burglar deterrent CD, can't I just make my own?

A: It is more difficult, expensive, and time-consuming than you may think. First, you will need the right power tools (or other machines), a superb microphone, and sound editing software for your computer. I performed many experiments to obtain the right sounds, and capture them in the most effective way possible. I then spent a few days digitally tweaking the sound files. Throughout this process, I discovered some secrets for producing sounds that are convincingly realistic. This took a lot of trial and error. For example, I already owned a number of professional microphones that I used for prior acoustic invention work, but only one of these turned out to be optimal for recording the operating machinery. Even something that I initially thought would be easy, such as recording sounds of vacuuming, turned out to be a real challenge. I had to experiment with several vacuum cleaners until I found one that, once recorded and played back, made me think, "Now that's a vacuum cleaner!"

Q: I heard that you are offering a reward for notifying you of copycat ideas. Is this true?

A: Yes. My invention is protected by copyrights and a pending patent. Contact me.

Our burglar deterrent CDs are inexpensive and easy to use, yet capable of protecting homes and businesses in an innovative way.
